We’ve all stumbled in the dark. Maybe it was down a stairway, or through the kitchen at midnight, or on an unlit outdoor path. Being in the dark comes with a sense of unease. We walk carefully with each step, unsure of what we will find when we place our foot down. There is no certainty. Sometimes we get where we are going without a problem, but other times we stumble, walking into a wall that should not have been there or miscalculating the distance to get where we are headed.
What a relief it is when we finally reach a source of light. Even a tiny ray of light shines in the darkness, illuminating so much more around us than we might expect. Everything around us comes into focus and we can see where we are headed.
Spiritually, we experience the same darkness when we don’t know Jesus as our Saviour. We live in darkness until we allow Him into our lives, shining His light on the darkness of our inner thoughts and outer actions. What wonder, what peace His presence brings.
Can you imagine living in a world where there is no hope? Where there is no Saviour? A world where Jesus had not come to die on the cross for our sins? How bleak that would be. We would continue to stumble along in the darkness of our lives, being born, living, and then dying, with no hope. Can you imagine a world without Jesus?
We know that there were prophecies about His birth. We know that the Jewish people expected a coming Saviour, but they were still walking in the dark. They lived in expectation of what might come, but they weren’t sure how or when their salvation would occur. They didn’t know what to expect next.
We get a perception of this darkness and the resulting light after Jesus’ birth in Isaiah 9:2 where it is explained this way: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone”. Verse 6 goes on to say, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Can you imagine the jubilation, the joy, that the great light of Jesus brought to His people? He still brings His light to those of us who have accepted Him as our Saviour and to those to whom He still offers salvation. His birth, and death, shine a great light on all of the dark places in our own experience and throughout the world as a whole. We can see His love shining in the darkness, sometimes as only a pinprick, but other times as a flood light bursting through and bathing the world in His glory.

In verse 6 Jesus is described in four different ways. He is our Wonderful Counsellor, a Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. We often read these words, but what do they really mean for us on a daily basis? How can we apply them to deepen our relationship with Jesus?
First, He is our Wonderful Counsellor. Isaiah spoke these words into a world marked by uncertainty, fear, and longing – somewhere not so different, perhaps, from the world we live in today. In the middle of national turmoil and personal despair, God offered the promise of a Saviour who would provide wisdom and guidance far beyond human understanding.
We often turn to our friends and family for advice but the answers they offer, while well-intentioned, can be flawed, biased, or incomplete. Jesus’ counsel is different. He sees the motives of our hearts, the complexities of our circumstances, and the full scope of our future.
What makes His counsel truly “wonderful” is that it doesn’t stop at mere words. Jesus has the power to transform hearts, renew minds, and bring order to chaos. He not only tells us the way, He enables us to walk in it. His guidance does more than just inform, it also restores.
We know we can turn to Jesus as our Counsellor, but what does that really look like? How do we incorporate it into our lives? Be still before Him. Make room in your day to listen to His voice. Open His Word. He will speak to you through Scripture with clarity and truth. Pray and ask for wisdom. He promises to give it generously (James 1:5). Finally, trust His leading. When you hear His voice, follow Him and pursue what He is calling you to do.
A Prayer to our Wonderful Counsellor:
Jesus, Wonderful Counsellor, thank You for being the One who understands every part of my life. Help me come to You first, not last. Tune my heart to hear Your voice, trust Your wisdom, and follow Your direction. Bring clarity where I’m confused, peace where I’m anxious, and hope where I feel weary. Guide me today with Your wonderful counsel. Amen.
In the passage, Jesus is next referred to as Mighty God. Isaiah’s prophecy revealed that the promised Child would not simply be a wise leader. He is Mighty God. In a world where strength often appears brutal, temporary, or self-serving, Jesus represents something very different. He stands as the true and perfect expression of divine power. The baby in the manger was the Maker of the stars, wrapped in humility so He could draw near to us.
Human strength can only go so far. It breaks under the weight of sin, guilt, and death. Jesus’ might reaches beyond every human limitation. He defeated sin on the cross, crushed the power of death in the resurrection, and opened the way to new life for all who believe.
The might of Jesus lifts us up. He meets us in our frailty with strength that does not run out.
When you feel overwhelmed, weary, or inadequate, remember that His strength is made perfect in your weakness.
We all have days when it seems we just don’t have the strength we need to persevere. How do we rely on His strength instead? We can surrender our burdens. What feels too heavy for us is not too heavy for Him. We can declare His strength over our fear, speaking His promises into our lives and the lives of our loved ones. We can walk in confidence, knowing that God goes before us.
Prayer to Our Mighty God:
Jesus, Mighty God, thank You that Your strength is greater than every challenge I face. Remind me that You are not only powerful, but you are powerful for me. Help me trust Your might when I feel weak, depend on Your strength when mine runs out, and rest in the victory You have already won. Be my strength today. Amen.

Isaiah goes on to refer to the coming Child as our Everlasting Father. This reveals His fatherly heart, His care, His protection, and His unending commitment to His people. When we look at Jesus and His compassion, forgiveness, and patience, we see the very heart of God. The words “Everlasting Father” remind us that He deals with us not as distant subjects, but as cherished children.
Jesus leads us gently, and He carries us when we can’t go on. When others abandon or disappoint, His presence never leaves. His love is not fragile or temporary. Instead, it is reliable, steady, and strong. Every human relationship has limits, but Jesus’ love does not. His faithfulness stretches beyond time, and His commitment is eternal. Nothing – not your past, not your weaknesses, not your struggles – can undo the everlasting care He has for His children.
How can we rest in this Fatherly love? We can receive His affection and let His love quiet our insecurities. We can trust in His guidance and bring our needs to Him. He delights to provide for us in our times of need. We can let His permanence anchor us because His love will not fade or fail. His love for us is everlasting.
Prayer to our Everlasting Father:
Jesus, Everlasting Father, thank You for loving me with a love that has no end. Teach me to trust Your care, rest in Your protection, and walk in the confidence of being Your child. Heal the places where I doubt Your love, and surround me today with the security of Your everlasting presence. Amen.
Jesus is our Prince of Peace. He does not merely bring peace; He is the Prince of Peace. In Him, peace takes the form of a Person who enters our chaos and restores our souls. Our greatest need is peace with the One who made us. Sin created a separation we could never bridge, but through the cross Jesus reconciled us to God. The Prince of Peace restores fellowship, removes guilt, and invites us into a personal relationship.
When life’s pressures, fears, and uncertainties stir anxiety in our hearts Jesus offers an inner calm the world cannot give. We, in turn, can share this peace with other people in our lives. As His followers, we carry His peace into our homes, workplaces, and communities.
How can we walk daily in His peace? We can surrender our anxieties to Him because peace comes when trust replaces fear. We need to stay close to His word, relying on His promises to calm the storms in our lives. We can surrender our anxieties to Him. When we welcome His presence we discover that peace is found in handing over control and living in communion with our Saviour. Finally, we can be peacemakers by letting His peace flow through our actions and words as we interact with the world around us.
Prayer to our Prince of Peace:
Jesus, Prince of Peace, quiet my heart with Your presence today. Where there is fear, bring Your calm. Where there is turmoil, bring Your order. Where there is brokenness, bring Your healing. Let Your peace rule my thoughts, guide my steps, and flow through me to the world around me. Amen.
May the love of Jesus shine brightly in your life during this Christmas season.
