“Set your minds on the things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
— Colossians 3:2-3 (CSB)
Imagine your heart as a lamp, bright and steady, meant to illuminate the path before you. At first, its light shines strong, fueled by joy and purpose. Over time, dust gathers, the flame flickers, and the glow fades. Ministry, family, and daily tasks pile up. Before you know it, you’re busy and productive—doing good things, yet spiritually dim and distant from the Light itself.
I know this feeling. There was a season when my heart felt like a lamp still lit, but faint. I was supporting ministry, caring for family, and managing daily details, yet something inside felt dim. I loved God, but I was distracted, and my lamp was drifting from its true source of light.
This struggle reflects what Paul speaks to in Colossians 3:2-3. His words call us back to our identity as citizens of heaven. They lift our eyes beyond the here and now. Our identity isn’t shaped by daily demands—it’s found in Christ. In God’s kingdom, where Christ reigns in perfect light, our first responsibility isn’t to do more but to abide—remaining in Jesus, the One who keeps our lamps burning.
So, what does abiding look like in the midst of daily life? Abiding in Christ is the oil that keeps our flame burning. It is not passive rest. It is a deliberate choosing —to stay near, to listen, and to draw strength from His presence.
As I returned to Jesus in small, intentional moments, His light began to rekindle my heart. The good news? That light isn’t mine alone; it lives in each of us, guiding our steps and shining like a beacon cutting through the darkness. Only He can keep our hearts anchored and our lamps radiant. When we lean on Him instead of ourselves, His light flows through us, bringing the hope and peace of Jesus into every corner.

This abiding happens in the ordinary. It’s saying, “Jesus, show me Your nearness here,” while folding laundry, pausing before a meeting to ask for His wisdom, or listening to someone’s burdened heart. Each act reignites the flame and reminds us that apart from Him, our glow cannot endure. His Spirit keeps our heart-lamps from running dry.
Consider this a gentle invitation to pause and abide with God. Fixing our eyes on eternity changes the way we live. Let your heart be a lamp—clean, full, and blazing. Don’t let the dust settle. Refill it with Christ and let His light shine so brightly that even in the darkest moments, His glory outshines the shadows.
Taking It Deeper:
Set aside moments to check your heart-lamp. Ask God to reveal where dust has settled—places where busyness or distractions have dimmed your light. Pick one way to abide in Him, and let His light gradually restore your flame. Notice how His light revives you and guides others. Reflect and write down one lasting step you can take to keep your lamp burning bright.
